HAPPY 1ST ANNIVERSARY TO PROVISIONS!

Last night we were thrilled to be at Provisions (the more casual of the dual-concept Pass & Provisions) to celebrate the restaurant’s first anniversary and selection as #6 on Bon Appetit’s Best New Restaurants 2013 list.  Both restaurants were  closed for regular business in order to be able to hold the celebration party there.

And what a celebration it was!  Partygoers were greeted by Travis who was pouring a nice selection of wines and champagne, accompanied by live music:001

Food was everywhere, starting with a buffet down the center of Provisions’ dining room, that included breads, cheeses, olives, lox (from the new brunch menu):014

Not to mention ham o’day (a wonderful salty, nutty prosciutto), with Adam manning the slicer (which I hereby dub “Big Red”):

And delicious pastas, including the infamous Cresta di Gallo/Hen of the Woods/Roasted Yeast/Parmesan, which will hopefully remain on the menu forever:

An assortment of crusty pizzas kept emerging piping hot from the wood-burning oven:

Did I mention there were lobster rolls?

There were many more delicious dishes — almost too many to count — including a refreshing chilled pea soup shooter, mustard-y potato salad, a salad of green beans, marinated yellow beans, and lots and lots of bacon, scallop ceviche, oysters, and best of all, HAM AND EGGS, an amazing dish from The Pass consisting of the biggest pork cracklings you’ve ever seen, set out to accompany tins of creme fraiche topped with dehydrated elements of a caviar service (egg yolk, capers, red onion) and an oval mound of hackleback sturgeon caviar (think WOW):

There were lots of great desserts too, including orange lollipops, a carrot-creme filled donut of sorts, a decadent chocolate soft-serve ice cream, and milkshakes made with soft-serve ice cream and stout.  (This is second-hand information — I was too full and happily settled in to go explore the desserts.)

The chefs celebrated by working their own party (shocking, I know), with Chef Seth Siegel-Gardner at the wood-burning oven:

Although we’ve been to both The Pass and Provisions many times now, I still marvel at all the clever design elements every time we go, including the bathroom (which apparently is a destination for some people who have never thought to “get a room” — a local writer awarded it #1 on her list of “Houston’s 10 Best Restaurants to Bang In.  Ewww — TMI.)

021Outside the restrooms is a giant chalkboard that bears bits of wisdom from Julia Child.  This one, in particular, struck me last night:

020 “You have to come on with a bang.”  Congratulations to the chefs and staff of Provisions on this first anniversary and selection as one of the 10 Best New Restaurants in the country — come on with a bang, indeed!
